Spring Forward: Strengthening Engagement and Wellness This March
As we move into spring, this is a great time for administrators and leadership teams to refocus on resident engagement and staff wellness. Encourage your teams to incorporate more movement into daily routines, take advantage of milder days for supervised outdoor time when appropriate, and remain mindful of hydration as temperatures fluctuate. Seasonal transitions can also impact mood and energy levels, so reinforcing consistent care routines, monitoring for subtle changes in residents, and supporting staff with clear communication and appreciation can help maintain a positive, energized environment throughout the month.

Preparing for Spring with Proactive Leadership
As we transition from winter into spring, March presents an important opportunity for administrators and leadership teams to reset priorities and refocus on proactive care. Seasonal changes can impact residents physically and emotionally, making this an ideal time to review care plans, monitor for subtle health changes, and ensure routines remain consistent. A brief interdisciplinary review with nursing, activities, dietary, and therapy teams can help identify areas where small adjustments may improve resident comfort and outcomes.
Spring also brings increased opportunities for engagement. As weather permits, encouraging safe outdoor time, fresh air, and light movement can positively influence mood, circulation, and overall well-being. Activity departments may consider introducing seasonal programming such as spring-themed crafts, gardening projects, or wellness challenges that promote participation across cognitive and physical ability levels. Even small environmental changes, like brightening common areas with seasonal décor, can create a renewed sense of energy throughout the building.
Hydration and nutrition remain essential during seasonal transitions. Fluctuating temperatures can lead to subtle dehydration risks, particularly among older adults. Leadership can reinforce hydration initiatives with staff, ensure fluids are readily available, and collaborate with dietary teams to incorporate lighter, seasonal menu options that remain nutrient-dense. Ongoing staff education and reminders help maintain awareness without overwhelming daily workflows.
Finally, March is a strong month to re-emphasize staff morale and communication. As administrators, setting the tone through visibility, encouragement, and appreciation makes a measurable difference. Consider recognizing team members for winter endurance and resilience, while also reinforcing goals for the months ahead. A positive, supported team is foundational to quality resident care, and intentional leadership during seasonal transitions helps ensure both residents and staff move confidently into spring.
