Focus on Fall Safety
As temperatures cool and daylight hours become shorter, October is a good time to review fall safety throughout your facility. Check walkways, entrances, and outdoor areas for leaves, moisture, uneven surfaces, or other potential hazards. Indoors, make sure hallways remain well lit and free of clutter. Taking a few simple precautions can help reduce the risk of falls and create a safer environment for residents, visitors, and staff.

The Power of Employee Recognition
In skilled nursing, every department plays an important role in creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for residents. From nursing and therapy to dietary, housekeeping, maintenance, activities, and administration, employees work together each day to keep the facility running smoothly. Taking the time to recognize these efforts can have a meaningful impact on morale and help employees feel valued for the work they do.
Employee recognition does not have to be complicated or costly. A personal thank-you from a supervisor, a handwritten note, recognition during a staff meeting, or a simple shout-out for a job well done can go a long way. The most meaningful recognition is often specific and timely. Letting an employee know exactly what they did well shows that their efforts are being noticed and appreciated.
Administrators can also encourage department leaders to make recognition part of their everyday leadership. Celebrate milestones, acknowledge teamwork, highlight employees who step in to help others, and share positive feedback received from residents and families. Remember to recognize employees in every department and on every shift so that appreciation reaches the people whose contributions may not always be as visible.
This October, consider making employee recognition a consistent part of your facility’s culture. Challenge your leadership team to recognize employees regularly and create opportunities for staff to recognize one another as well. When appreciation becomes part of the everyday workplace, it can strengthen teamwork, boost morale, and help create an environment where employees are proud to be part of the team.
